About La Terra Therapy

The Story Behind La Terra Therapy

Hello and welcome,


My name is Hayley Barlow, and I’m a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) and the founder of La Terra Therapy. Becoming a counsellor has always felt like a part of my path, but the idea for La Terra Therapy truly came to life when I stepped outside my comfort zone and moved abroad to Italy in my early 20s. While learning the beautiful language, one phrase resonated deeply with me: “La Terra.”


What does La Terra mean? It simply means The Earth. In that moment, my intuition told me this was the name I wanted for my practice—a name that would reflect growth, grounding, and connection—long before I pursued my Master’s in Clinical Counselling.


Through my own journey with mental health and trauma, these experiences sparked a deep desire to help others navigating similar challenges and planted the seed for my dream of becoming a counsellor from a young age. Over time, as I healed and learned to care for myself, I discovered that intuition feels fundamentally different from anxiety—it is steady, grounding, and quietly knows what is right. Learning to distinguish my inner guidance from worry and rumination became a powerful part of my healing, allowing me to reconnect with who I truly was before trauma and anxiety convinced me of who I thought I should be. This insight continues to shape the way I support clients today.


Just as my own experiences helped me find my way back to who I truly am, the Earth reminds us of the foundation and nourishment we all need to grow. Like roots anchoring a tree, we each have the capacity to ground ourselves, thrive, and reconnect with our authentic selves. Yet, life can create experiences that block this growth—trauma, anxiety, depression, or low self-esteem can make us feel disconnected from who we are. By tending to ourselves, honoring both body and mind, we can begin to clear these blocks and nurture our roots, allowing us to grow steadily and authentically.


La Terra Therapy is built on the belief that we can return to ourselves, reconnect with our bodies, minds, and hearts, and heal as a whole. By honouring the interconnection between mind, body, and spirit, we can cultivate resilience, clarity, and authenticity—one gentle step at a time.

Counselling Approach

I take a holistic, integrative approach to counselling, tailoring each session to your unique needs. My work is primarily rooted in somatic therapy, helping you reconnect with your body and nervous system to access deeper patterns and experiences. From there, we bring in cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and other evidence-based tools to foster insight, clarity, and lasting change.

Somatic Therapy

Somatic therapy is body-based, focusing on the connection between mind and body. Emotional experiences like anxiety, trauma, or stress can get held in the body, often showing up as tension or physical sensations.


Through gentle exercises such as movement, breathwork, or meditation, we explore these connections and release trapped emotions. This work helps you build a sense of safety and trust within your body—creating a strong foundation for deeper healing.

Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy

Whereas somatic therapy helps you reconnect with your nervous system and establish safety in your body, CBT is a talk-based therapy that focuses on thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. Our minds naturally get caught in unhelpful or repetitive thought patterns, which can heighten emotions like anxiety, sadness, or frustration, and behaviours like avoidance or self-isolation.


CBT helps you transform these patterns, fostering more positive feelings and behaviours. Together with somatic therapy, this integrated approach allows us to work from the body to the mind, creating deeper, lasting change.

Integrating Somatic Therapy and CBT

In our sessions, we often blend skills from both somatic therapy and CBT, starting with the body to create safety and grounding, and then working with the mind to bring insight and lasting transformation.
