Hello and welcome,
My name is Hayley Barlow and I am a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) who is the founder of La Terra Therapy. Although I have always felt that my path in life centred around becoming a counsellor, the idea behind La Terra Therapy developed after venturing outside of my comfort zone and moving abroad to Italy in my early 20's. While learning the language, one of the phrases that resonated with my soul was "La Terra".
What does La Terra mean? La Terra simply means: The Earth. It was in that moment of hearing this phrase for the first time that a dream was born and my intuition told me that this is what I wanted to name my practice after pursuing my Master's in Clinical Counselling.
The Earth provides a foundation and nourishment for all living beings. It is where our roots are first established and continue to grow. However, we often go through experiences in life that can hinder our growth and prevent us from reaching our full potential as humans. These experiences can interfere with our ability to live a life that is authentic and meaningful to ourselves, resulting in mental health challenges such as trauma, anxiety, depression, or low self-esteem.
The Earth can remind us of what is essential for us to thrive, and that is through honouring the interconnection between the mind, body, and spirit. In doing so, we can learn coping strategies for anxiety, trauma, and other challenges that allow us to reconnect with ourselves and others. As such, the purpose behind La Terra Therapy is to help us get back to our authentic selves and to heal as a whole.
"There is nothing to be fixed, because there is nothing inherently wrong with you. You have simply been responding to what has happened to you in life."
As a counsellor, I take a holistic approach that incorporates various evidence-based therapeutic modalities into our sessions together. Two of the main modalities that I rely on to help my clients in their growth towards healing and transformation include somatic therapy and cognitive-behavioural therapy.
Somatic therapy is a body-based approach that focuses on the connection between the mind and body. It acknowledges that emotional experiences such as anxiety or trauma can become held or trapped within our bodies and manifest through various physical sensations. The goal of somatic therapy is to help clients explore how their experiences are connected to their bodily sensations, and release these emotions and sensations through physical exercises such as movement, breath-work, or meditation. This can help clients establish a sense of safety and trust within their own bodies.
Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) is a form of talk therapy that focuses on the connection between our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. CBT begins by exploring the client's daily thought patterns. As human beings, our minds are often geared towards negative thinking These thoughts can lead to unpleasant emotions (such as anxiousness, sadness, or frustration) and behaviours (such as avoidance or self-isolation). CBT interventions can help clients transform their thought patterns in order for them to experience more positive feelings and behaviours, helping them heal from anxiety, trauma, depression, or low self-esteem.
During our sessions, we will often use skills and techniques from both somatic therapy and CBT to help heal your mind, body, and soul.
